After unusual animal attacks in Costa Rica bring evidence of extinct species returning, Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler's investigation leads them to John Hammond, a billionare with a nature reserve on Isla Nublar being used as a front for a theme park commericalizing his research into resurrecting extinct species of dinosaur. A visit to the island with several other selected visitors turns sour when Nedry, the lead programmer of the dinosaurs' genes, gets revenge for being cheated out of significant money from Hammod by disabling park systems so he can take embryos for himself to sell. This turns the park into a lion's den as this frees the dinosaurs during a blinding rainstorm, leaving everyone to run for survival.

In the year 2013, the world was devasted by nuclear war, forcing fleeing survivors in Moscow to take refuge in the city's subway system. Twenty years later, a young man named Artyom ventures from his corner in one of the outermost stations into the heart of the Metro through war-torn factions, cultists, and the supernatural to warn those who are left of a new threat from the surface breaking in.

In the Metro, many stations on the outer reaches of the line rely on the supplies, especially medicine, of those further in the center to survive. When communication to those central stations are lost, scout teams venture through the infested tunnels between the stations to figure out why. They too are never heard from. As more bodies disappear, a border guard named Hunter leads an expedition of his own to finally find answers.

Two years after 2033, Artyom is back at his home station, but is still restless after hearing a radio message in Ostankino Tower. Artyom makes several attempts to make contact with other potential survivors from the radiation-stained surface, only to be met with silence. An acquaintance, a writer named Homer, tells Artyom of a man he met during his travels who claims to have made contact with one of the other cities, prompting the two to make the dangerous trek through the Metro tunnels once again to find this man in the hopes that he and Artyom's combined knowledge will finally let them establish contact with one of the other colonies outside the Metro.
