On Bilbo's 111st birthday, he suddenly leaves his home, and along with it, a strange ring to his heir Frodo. Seventeen years later, Bilbo's friend Gandalf, a wizard, visits Frodo to warn him and enlist his help to deliver the strange ring to the Elven city Rivendell while avoiding pursuit from horsemen serving a great evil that seeks to claim the ring to regain long lost power and rule the world. Once there, a council representing various factions come to a heavy conclusion: the ring must be destroyed, with Frodo as its bearer and the council forming his party known as The Fellowship.

While on the journey to destroy the ring of power, an attack from a band known as Uruk-Hai and led by the wizard Saruman splits the Fellowship apart. Frodo and Sam take desolate roads, guided by the corrupted Gollum to navigate secret paths so infested with restless spirits that even Uruk-Hai don't dare cross. Meanwhile, the rest of the fellowship are on the search for two other hobbits in the party that were taken hostage, leading them to the human strongholds that stand in the path of their destination. From here, the group meet Gandalf again, who ensures that the hobbits are safe, and sends them to join in a stand against the Uruk-Hai to stop their onslaught.

As the evil forces continue to close around the last city the fellowship are defending, they find themselves seeking help from an army of restless undead, whose curse can only be broken once they fight alongside their king. The undead together with the existing forces prove enough to hold back the invading army as the fellowship prepare for one last battle at the enemy's doorstep. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam make it past the enemy gates, and must traverse the heart of their operations in order to destroy the ring of power before its creator wields it.
